Mathematics

The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

By studying mathematics, students learn to work mathematically – developing fluency, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning and communication skills.

The syllabus consists of the following strands:

  • number and algebra
  • measurement and geometry
  • statistics and probability.

In Year 11 and 12, the study of mathematics is optional. Courses offered include:

  • Mathematics Extension 2 (Year 12 only)
  • Mathematics Extension 1
  • Mathematics Advanced
  • Mathematics Standard 2
  • Mathematics Standard 1 (Optional HSC examination)
  • Mathematics Life Skills.

Maths Tuition

Some of the keys to success in mathematics are having a well-structured study programme and having access to one-to-one assistance. For these reasons, the Katoomba High School mathematics faculty offers free tuition twice per week during each term.

Maths Tuition is on every Tuesday and Thursday from 3.30pm to 4.30pm in the Library. Everyone is welcome!

Bookings are not essential, but students need to find their own way home at the end of each session.

Our Aim

We aim to foster student success through

  • helping our students develop confidence and a positive attitude towards maths
  • providing engaging learning opportunities
  • developing problem-solving and numeracy skills through the real-world application of maths
  • maximising one-to-one assistance e.g. through our Maths Tuition Programme (see above)
